Ricardo Arellano, Adrienne Banka and Dr. Michael Janssen, divers and founders of Cervecería Punta Sur created the first local brewery on Cozumel Island after several years of challenges, work and much learning.
The idea came when Ricardo and Adrienne worked as diving instructors. By forming friendships with customers from all over the world, they soon learned that the concept of a brewery where fresh and local beer could be purchased was something that many wanted.
A short time later, Ricardo and Adrienne bought what was necessary to prepare their first homemade beer. With the help and experience of Dr. Janssen, owner of Snowy Mountain Brewery, the love for the art of brewing was born and the dream of opening the first Cozumel brewery began.
They traveled from Colorado to Wyoming to learn from great brewing masters, and experimented with many recipes and processes until they decided to buy their professional beer brewing equipment.
The creators of Cervecería Punta Sur did not imagine how challenging it would be to make their dream come true, but they did it with such passion that at the end of August 2017, Cervecería Punta Sur opened its doors to the public.
The vision of Ricardo, Adrienne and Dr. Janssen grew and Cervecería Punta Sur went from being a simple brewery to a space where people could enjoy a local craft beer accompanied by high quality food in a relaxed and tropical environment.
Over time, the team and the Punta Sur Brewery grew, to the extent that Ricardo and Adrienne now spend more time in the brewery than in the water.
However, their love for the sea influences them in an important way. For this reason, Cervecería Punta Sur always works to be an environmentally friendly, conscious and proactive company in the treatment of its waste. Similarly, they have implemented lionfish as the main ingredient in several of their dishes because it is an invasive species and as a way to counteract overfishing in Cozumel.
In August 2018, thanks to the support of the Cozumel community, customers, suppliers, friends and the Punta Sur family in general, we celebrated our first anniversary.
Enthusiastic about what the future has for Cervecería Punta Sur, we will continue working to meet new objectives such as promoting the culture of craft beer consumption, transmitting our values and principles and placing our products and services in new points of sale.
